Fig Tree Country Retreat

Paradise on the hill

It’s a rare commodity to find a fly-in destination where you can land on site, stay the night in accommodation that has all the creature comforts of home, while your plane sits happily in a hangar. It’s what you’d call the holy grail for pilots and we well and truly found it at Fig Tree Country Retreat, just 40 minutes from Toowoomba on the Darling Downs.

The 140 acre property sits pretty on a grassy hill so it’s easy to spot from the air. If you’re planning to fly in you can find details of the strip on OzRunways under “YFIG”. Owners, Ken and Ruth will kindly lend pilots a set of wheels too, so you can drive into the nearest town of Pittsworth for holiday supplies. Did someone say wine and cheese on the deck?

The property is a far cry from what Ken and Ruth first stumbled upon a few years ago. It was overgrown and rugged but they couldn’t resist the potential they saw. Fast forward a few years and Fig Tree Country Retreat is now a labour of love that the couple generously share with others.

There are a few options when it comes to accommodation, including the Glamping Silo and Studio Apartment which sits beside the hangar. You can also book the main Homestead, which sleeps up to 6 guests.

Our stay here was all about enjoying the simple things in life; a glass of wine shared with good company, admiring the millions of stars of an evening and taking time to retreat and reset in nature. It’s these little pleasures that flying allows us to enjoy and we never take that for granted.
